Book #3 from the series: The Midnight Series

Midnight’s Secret (The Midnight Series Book 3)

About

The Man in Black is on the loose again.
But Jessie’s return to London uncovers a chilling reality: a Nazi mole is embedded within the British SIS, leading to the capture, torture, and execution of British agents parachuted into France. Debriefed by none other than Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Jessie receives a daunting new mission. Recognizing the gravity of the mole’s threat, Churchill appoints Jessie as his personal agent, entrusting her with the task of infiltrating the enemy’s network and dismantling their operations from within.

Going undercover in MI6 headquarters, Jessie soon uncovers treachery that extends far deeper than she and Churchill ever imagined. When an assassination attempt on Churchill fails, the tables turn, and she finds herself framed as a Nazi spy. Forced to go on the run, Jessie must navigate a web of deceit, always watching her back, knowing that capture means certain death.

Praise for this book

"Jessie doesn’t disappoint! The intrigue kept me pinned to my seat. The ever evolving relationships are fascinating to follow. The drama of entering WWII with the destruction of the bombing raids and the patriotism at war with internal treason was captivating. I can’t wait until December to see what Jessie gets into next!"

"I enjoyed this episode of the Jessie Fordham WWII story. The plot evolves around the attempt to overthrow the British government and replace it with a Nazi-centric group. I enjoyed learning about the home guard’s training to protect the beaches from the dreaded invasion, and was delighted that the author addressed the real life events that provided the stimulus for an episode in the story!

There was more action centered around the secondary characters in this book, and less about Jessie’s personal development. Of her family, we hear nothing at all, as they are not involved in any of the action. (The action takes place mostly at the level of the mutineers and the team trying to prevent their success). The overall storyline moves forward as does the time for America to enter into the war officially."

"I’ve been a Tom Kane fan ever since his Brittle Trilogy, and his Midnight Series has only deepened my appreciation for his work. As a WWII history buff, I especially enjoy how he weaves real historical events into gripping fiction, and Midnight’s Secret is no exception.
This third book in the series brings back familiar characters (always a treat!) and throws Jessie into her most dangerous mission yet: uncovering a Nazi mole in the British SIS. With Churchill himself giving her the assignment, the stakes are sky-high. The story quickly turns into a fast-paced espionage thriller, complete with betrayals, an assassination attempt, and Jessie on the run, accused of being a Nazi spy.
Kane blends cozy mystery vibes with intense wartime drama, and I love how grounded the story feels thanks to all the historical detail. I found myself Googling things mid-read, only to discover they were real!
If you enjoy historical thrillers with smart, determined characters and lots of twists, Midnight’s Secret is a must-read. A strong continuation of the series and possibly my favorite yet."
