The Perfect Bitch was a 3.5-4 star read for me. A ruthlessly ambitious young actress turns her cruelty into a celebrated screen persona. She sacrifices true love, loyalty, and pieces of herself for fame… then discovers the role that made her 'immortal' may come with a very dark cost.
My favourite line from this book is: 'fairness is a peasant virtue' AHAHAAHAHA
This read was wickedly amusing. I finished it in one sitting. Lovella is absolutely awful but she is the reason the book is as entertaining as it is. Her dry one-liners made me laugh, especially saying fairness is a peasant virtue which is to be honest, in the real world… kinda true.
Beware that the FMC is not just horrible… she is unlikeable on ANOTHER LEVEL (I don't mind that at all) and Julian’s fate was the moment that made her choices feel truly unforgivable. Lovella earned her ending, but somehow I grieved for the woman she might have been.
moral of the story: never sell your soul for fame and fortune, in the end, it is never worth it.

Tom Kane is one of my favourite authors, and for good reason. His writing draws the reader in right from the start and keeps (me) glued to each book right the last word - including this one. The second in his Noir series of novellas, this book, like the last one has a shock at the end. It tells the story of an ambitions young woman, enduring poverty in a seedy hotel room with no one but her good and faithful friend and admirer, Eddie, a photographer. It is the mid 1930s. This is a story of how, if a person rises to the top by being so completely focused on appearances and always ready with a witty comback that they have no room for anyone else, there will be consequences. And no escape. This, I think is the premise so far - at the end there is no choice. It only took me a day to read this and the first book and both left my thinking "Oh my Gosh! Excellent writing, excellent to read. 5* plus!

Brilliantly acerbic biography of Hollywood fictional star.We are introduced to the debut of a young lady who negotiates her way into the Hollywood studio system and who doesn't care who she uses and discards to create her image of the perfect bitch. She revels in the attention and fearfulness of those around her. I particularly liked the often barbed or cutting quips she used to manipulate men or crumble any potential rival women. It felt like she was always on set and acting the role rather than living a fulfilling life. The ending is great and leads the reader in with more showing than telling. An interesting and compelling read.
